Knowing the types of search tools available and mastering some general search tips can make your research projects easier to accomplish and your searches more profitable.  The research tips below can help you make a good start.

 

Carefully Select Your Search Terms Broad or general terms will return thousands of possible sites.  Try to use terms that are more specific to your topic. 
 
Use Boolean Operators Boolean operators are words that allow you to combine search terms in most search engines.

Use Quick Reference Sources
  • Almanacs
  • Statistical collections
  • Biographical information
  • Directories of companies, organizations, and government agencies
  • Opinion poll data
  • Subject-specific dictionaries
Use a variety of sources Sources such as periodicals, journals (popular or scholarly), index, databases, encyclopedias, or thesis or dissertations.
