 Traditional vs. Alternative Assessment

Traditional Approaches to Assessment are objective test/exams where students choose a response from a list, such as:

multiple-choice
true/false or
matching

Alternative Assessment are outcomes achieved using various format as listed below:

  • Capstone class or Projects:

Provide an opportunity for students to synthesize what they have learned in a number of courses—in their majors as well as in electives and general education courses. Some institutions plan public events in which students present their projects, either for assessment by a team or panel or simply as a means of sharing their experiences with other students or faculty.
  • Learning Logs

Learning Logs are logged examples of how students suggest use content or concepts.

  • Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATS)

Classroom Assessment is a learner-centered, teacher-directed approach designed to improve student learning in the individual classroom. The goal of classroom assessment is to provide instructors with continuous feedback about how students are experiencing the teaching and learning environment for the purposes of course improvement and improvement of teaching methods.
  • Oral Presentations

Oral presentations are verbal presentation of work.

  • Demonstrations

Demonstrations are student demonstrations of the knowledge and skills they have learned and acquired, this emphasizes the integration and application of the separate facets of the academic major. Examples include student recitals, art exhibitions, practice teaching, and supervised field experiences.
  • Portfolios

Collections of student work that demonstrate student learning and development over time.
